Why did you not get that job?

You have attended the interviews you have performed well and you met all the criteria required, yet despite this you were not offered the position.

Could there be another reason for the rejection, is there something in your past that has forced the potential employer to reject you and what could it be? It is possible that you may have level of debt that is considered to be too high by the employer or worse still you may have a CCJ (County Court Judgement) against your name, it is possible that you do not know that there is a CCJ against you.

We know of one candidate who did not know that he had an unpaid parking fine (plus charges) against his name because he moved house between getting a ticket, which he says he never saw, and the court hearing that he never knew about. The potential employer saw an unpaid fine and bad credit rating and therefore rejected him without any immediate explanation.

Anyone who has worked in the finance industry knows that full checks will be made about their background, with any failure to disclose information resulting in the job offer being withdrawn. Now we are seeing other companies following the same procedure, therefore it is essential that you inform the recruiter and interviewer of any misdemeanour or if you are heavily in debt before you resign or accept the new post.

Salaries are stagnating.

It has been reported that the average worker’s pay will remain at the same level until 2015 despite huge rises in energy costs, petrol and food. This is at a time when board members, sports personalities and entertainment stars are seeing remuneration rise by millions.

The rich are getting richer and the middle and working classes are paying for the financial problems in the world.

Is there a way for the average person to buck the trend and make more money, even though we are in a recession? The answer is “Yes”. For those people that really want to earn more and start enjoying life there is a way forward.

They could do the simple thing and change to a better paid job, all they have to do is look at their skills and value, look at the market, brush up their CV and start networking their skills. If carried out correctly and providing their skills are good then very soon the opposition will snap them up.

The other thing for these workers to do is to look at their skills and see if they can be put to use in another more rewarding way.

Staying with the same company is not an option if employees really want to get paid their worth and receive the job satisfaction they crave.

For those workers that are really serious in improving their lot then they should invest some money in their future, employ a good career advisor to help you (but do not use a professional CV writer), get them to help you analyse your strengths and weaknesses and to point out potential opportunities. If you can’t afford the services of a career advisor then contact a specialised recruitment company. Then move into the job you want.

A CV is an essential tool in any job hunt, it is the usual means of securing an interview and is effectively your advert summarising what you have to offer a potential employer.

Why then get somebody else to write it for you? After all nobody knows you better than you yourself do.

Admittedly a CV is not easy to put together, especially if you have no particular job in mind, it can take a great deal of thought and deliberation to get right.

I see hundreds of CV’s and very few are truly effective in communicating what the individual has to offer. I can immediately identify those written by CV writers and career mentoring companies. They tend to be formulaic and somehow lack the personal touch. It is necessary for the reader to be prepared to think laterally if they are to see the qualities they are seeking.

By all means seek assistance in putting a CV together but do not let someone else write it for you. It is too easy to send the wrong message, make false claims or create misunderstandings if you do so. I have seen many people fail at interview caught out by the content of CV’s they had not written themselves.

Unlock UR Potential believe a CV should be written by yourself! We take great care to help individuals identify and understand exactly what they have to offer any potential employer. Only then will we offer guidance in how to put together a concise CV designed to provide the greatest impact.

If you are thinking of investing in your future give us a call to see what makes us different.

With the economy depressed and all employers closely watching costs it is never going to be easy finding a new job. Those with sought after skills may be an exception but reportedly even they are not walking into jobs like they once did.

In a highly competitive jobs market it should be remembered that the employer has a considerable choice of candidates to choose from. Last week saw hundreds apply for two apprentice butcher opportunities at £6 per hour, this is by no means an exception.

To stand any chance it is essential to get yourself noticed. Your CV must stand out from the crowd and present a compelling reason to call you to interview. The majority of the CV’s that we see do not even come close to achieving this. Even some of the most senior candidates seem equally unable to construct a truly representative CV.

But the CV is not any use without an opportunity, and it is no use waiting for one when there are so few around, it is essential to be proactive and seek out possible vacancies or even to market oneself to potential employers. This may involve considerable effort but it will shorten the odds in your favour.

Confidence and self-belief are essential to succeed. If in any doubt seek professional advice such as that UnlockURpotential offers.

How much would you invest in your career?

This may sound a strange question to ask in times of austerity and cut backs but would you invest in your future career? The investment may not be financial it may be that the investment is purely in taking the time to further your education or training, taking a masters or learning a foreign language or a first aid course. All these can help your career and offer you alternatives to what you are doing.

The investment may even mean a complete change in your way forward, perhaps you have an idea what you want to do but are trapped in that never ending circle of going to the same place of work and doing the same job day in day out, yes you get well paid, you may even be one of the lucky heads of a council who is well overpaid, but are you achieving what you want out of life, or is it just a way to earn loads of money for a relatively short term and very insecure future?

By taking this option it could mean less money for now, but the chances of even greater financial rewards later on, it could mean better health and more interaction with your family, rather than the person who leaves home in the early hours of the morning and returns late at night and is only seen at weekends.

If the idea of a career change or if you are just trying to find a better opening in your current profession but it eludes you, would you pay for serious help?

There are many companies out there that offer career guidance and help in finding a new position, some even assist you in finding a new career path altogether. This comes back to the title and first question.

How much would you pay for a service that offers you better prospects and/or a better life style? £5,000, £10,000, £20,000 more or less. Would £5,000 invested now but giving you a pay rise of £10,000 be worth it, would £10,000 now and a longer happier life be worth it?

We do offer career mentoring service, but it is not for the faint hearted, to participate you have to be really committed to work with us and to be really honest with yourself. As for the cost…well what is it worth to you?
